Washington authorized the air carrier Belarus to maintain and purchase components for Boeing.
Belarus' national air carrier Belavia will be able to service its Boeing aircraft and buy components for them as a result of the easing of U.S. sanctions, the U.S. embassy in Lithuania told Reuters.
Washington announced the lifting of sanctions on Belavia amid the Lukashenko regime's decision to release 52 political prisoners. Among the pardoned are 14 foreigners, including citizens of Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Germany, France and the UK. Also released are Belarusian opposition activist, former presidential candidate Nikolai Statkevich and philosopher Vladimir Matskevich.
Western countries began to tighten sanctions against Lukashenko's regime after protests related to the outcome of the presidential "election" in 2020. In 2021, the European Union introduced restrictive measures against Belavia, while in 2023 - the United States. Minsk tried to challenge the restrictions, but without success.
As the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita wrote, the easing of sanctions was Lukashenko's condition for the release of prisoners. Before the announcement of the pardon of the convicts, the special envoy of US President Donald Trump, John Cole, arrived in Minsk. He handed Lukashenka a letter from Trump.
According to Cole after his meeting with Lukashenka, Washington also wants to return its embassy to Minsk. He did not give specific dates. The State Department suspended the U.S. embassy in Belarus after Russia's war in Ukraine began.
