The U.S. president cited information from Benjamin Netanyahu and “a few other people.”
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that an Israeli plumber who had never flown an aircraft before saved a Flydubai passenger plane from crashing. He told reporters this at the White House. According to him, during the flight, the co-pilot—"possibly a terrorist or a madman"—attacked the captain with a knife. The wounded captain managed to open the cockpit door and called for help. A plumber who was among the passengers “yanked” the attacker out of his seat and threw him backward, after which other passengers held him down.
When the plane began to plummet “with g-forces beyond the permissible limit,” the plumber sat in the pilot’s seat, pulled the control yoke toward him, and stabilized the aircraft, the White House chief said. Later, other experts on board took control. “And so this plumber, who had never flown a plane before, had the sense to pull the control column. And when he was asked why he did that, he said he watches the show *Air Crash Investigation*. He said he watches it all the time and, thanks to it, had a rough idea of how to fly a plane!” Trump noted. He clarified that he had heard this story from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and “a few other people.”
On Wednesday, September 30, a Flydubai Boeing 737 flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv sent out a distress signal and made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. During the flight, the crew also reported a possible attempt to hijack the plane. Israeli intelligence believes that the co-pilot attempted to seize control of the aircraft in order to crash it into a skyscraper in Tel Aviv. During the incident, the plane lost approximately 4,600 meters in altitude in 37 seconds. According to The Telegraph, a passenger Yaniv Hayun burst into the cockpit—he subdued the attacker and then took control of the plane himself. After the plane landed in Saudi Arabia, the co-pilot was arrested. He is believed to be a citizen of Oman.
Netanyahu stated that he is investigating a plot aimed at “crashing the plane along with everyone on board.” Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz called the incident “an attempted jihadist attack.” Flydubai stated that the motive behind the incident is under investigation and urged people not to draw “premature conclusions.”
