Merz warned of the consequences of reducing aid to Kyiv.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for continued support for Ukraine, stating that Europe’s security depends directly on Germany’s stability. He made these remarks in Münster at the Westphalian Peace Prize award ceremony, which this year was awarded to NATO, according to Die Zeit.

“If Germany falters, Europe and Ukraine will falter,” Merz stated. According to him, scaling back aid to Kyiv could lead to the war ending on Moscow’s terms, a mass exodus of Ukrainians to the West, and serious destabilization of Ukraine itself.

The chancellor also warned that if Ukraine were to be defeated, the Russian war machine could turn against NATO countries. He rejected calls to reduce support for Kyiv and linked aid to Ukraine to the protection of Germany’s security.

“We must be prepared to defend our freedom and security,” Merz emphasized.

Separately, the chancellor mentioned hybrid threats from Russia. As an example, he cited a recent incident involving a drone near Leipzig Airport and stated that Germany must be able to counter such attacks.

Hendrik Wüst , Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia , supported the government’s course of action and reiterated plans to increase defense and security spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.

At the same time, according to Merz, diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement with Moscow have so far been unsuccessful. A protest took place outside City Hall in Münster during the ceremony.
