Zelensky Promoted Denis Prokopenko To Military Rank

The commander of Azov was promoted to the rank of brigadier general.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has conferred the rank of brigadier general to the commander of "Azov" Denis Prokopenko.

This is reported by Charter97.org with reference to the relevant decree of the Ukrainian head of state.

"Assign the military rank of brigadier general to Colonel Prokopenko Denis Gennadyevich - commander of the 1st corps of the National Guard of Ukraine "Azov"," Zelensky's decree said.

It should be noted that earlier Prokopenko was a colonel.

Denis Prokopenko (call sign "Redis") - a warrior of the National Guard of Ukraine, Hero of Ukraine, who took part in the defense of Mariupol.

Born June 27, 1991 in Kiev. He received his higher education at the Kyiv National Linguistic University, specializing in Germanic philology.

Before the beginning of his military career, he was an active participant of the ultras movement of the Dynamo soccer club (Kyiv).

Prokopenko's military path began in July 2014, when he joined the ranks of the then Azov battalion. He worked his way up from a private fighter to regimental commander.

World fame was gained in 2022 during the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, leading the 86-day defense of Mariupol and the Azovstal plant in complete encirclement. In May 2022, Prokopenko was captured by the Russians.

In September of the same year, as part of a large exchange, he was released and sent to Turkey, from where he returned to Ukraine in July 2023.

After his return, Denis Prokopenko again stood up for Ukraine.
