Germany Prepares Fleet For Operation In The Strait Of Hormuz

German warships are sent to the Mediterranean Sea.

Germany is sending warships to the Mediterranean Sea in preparation for a possible deployment in the Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions in the region.

This is according to an interview with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius to the Rheinische Post newspaper.

He said the German navy's involvement in the operation is only possible if the fighting in the region ceases and a mandate is obtained from the Bundestag.

"The prerequisite for the involvement of the German navy in the Strait of Hormuz is, first of all, the cessation of hostilities. After all, we are one of the largest armed forces in Europe and therefore have to take responsibility. At the same time, we realize that we cannot overstretch our capabilities," Pistorius said.

The minister explained that Germany has considerable experience in identifying and clearing mines, and it is these capabilities that can be used to ensure safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

To speed up possible deployment, some units have decided to move closer to the region in advance. In particular, a minesweeper will be sent to the Mediterranean Sea together with a command and support vessel.

"We will deploy a minesweeper to the Mediterranean Sea and provide it with a command and support vessel," Pistorius said.

He also added that Germany may temporarily reduce its presence in other regions in coordination with partners in order to fulfill the tasks in the Strait of Hormuz.
