Tesalit has fallen.
The situation in Mali against the background of intensified fighting there with the participation of rebel and pro-government forces is becoming more and more interesting. Recently, representatives of Russia and the "Front for the Liberation of Azawad" (FLA) may have reached an agreement on the withdrawal of the Russian "African Corps" from the important town of Tesalit in the north of the country.
This is reported by La Revue Afrique. If this information is confirmed, Tesalit will become the second settlement that Russian forces are abandoning as part of the current rebel operation, thus the Russians are setting up their allies, the Malian units.
The observed dynamics could indicate a serious weakening of the control of Russian-backed government forces in northern Mali. The loss of Tesalit potentially means the transfer of a significant part of the northern territories under the control of the Tuaregs. In the near future, if the same trend continues, the front line may shift closer to the Niger River.
