A spokeswoman for the U.S. president called the attacker a "lunatic."
The attacker who carried out the shooting at the Washington Hilton Hotel on April 25 was trying to kill US President Donald Trump and eliminate as many high-ranking officials of his administration as possible. White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt reported this on April 26 on social network X.
She said the White House Correspondents' Association dinner was supposed to be held in a festive atmosphere with jokes by the president and an emphasis on free speech. However, the event was disrupted by an attack by an armed man she called a lunatic.
"I was with President Trump and the first lady backstage after we were quickly evacuated to safety by Secret Service personnel. President Trump was truly fearless, but as he said last night, this political violence must end," Livitt wrote.
She also thanked law enforcement for their quick response and protection of those in attendance. She especially noted the agent who was shot in the chest but was able to immediately neutralize the attacker.
April 25, a shooting occurred at a White House Correspondents' Association event at the Washington Hilton Hotel. Trump, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, and members of the White House administration were there. In total, about 2,500 guests. The attacker was detained.
