Because of China's ship fixation.
Taiwan on Monday night detected two Chinese warships in waters near the Penghu Islands in the Taiwan Strait. Against this backdrop, the country dispatched its navy and air force for surveillance.
The Reuters reported.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said that on the evening of April 27, a Chinese destroyer and a frigate entered waters southwest of the Penghu Islands, where major Taiwanese naval and air bases are located.
Without going into details, the ministry added that Taiwan's military "closely monitored the formation and took appropriate measures using naval and air forces." It also showed color aerial photos of the two ships, but did not give their exact locations.
Already Tuesday morning, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said in its daily review of China's 24-hour activity that nine Chinese warships were now operating around the island and 22 military aircraft had been spotted.
The Chinese Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Earlier this month, it said China's regular military actions around Taiwan are "fully justified and reasonable," and any tensions are the fault of the government in Taipei.
It's important to add here that China views democratically governed Taiwan as its territory. And as Reuters writes, the country sends its warships and airplanes into the waters and skies around the island on a daily basis, which has drawn condemnation from the Taiwanese government. Taipei in turn rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims, saying only the island's residents can decide their own fate.
What Taiwan's leader says about China's actions
Today on Tuesday, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te said Chinese operations in the gray zone are irregular tactics that aim to exhaust the enemy without resorting to open hostilities. He emphasized that psychological pressure is intensifying by the day.
He also announced that the capabilities of Taiwan's coast guard will be strengthened. According to Lai, this includes integrated maritime and air surveillance capabilities, as well as increased use of drones, next-generation radar systems and infrared thermal imaging systems.
