The Pentagon announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops.
The Pentagon has announced the withdrawal of 5,000 U.S. troops from NATO ally Germany amid escalating disagreements between President Donald Trump and Europe over war with Iran. This is according to Reuters.
"The president is rightly responding to these counterproductive statements," the official said.
The Pentagon said the withdrawal is expected to be completed within the next six to 12 months.
The official said the drawdown would return U.S. troop levels in Europe to roughly pre-2022 levels, before Russia's invasion of Ukraine that triggered the military buildup under then-President Joe Biden.
A brigade combat team now in Germany will be withdrawn from the country, he said, and a long-range fire support battalion that the Biden administration had planned to begin deploying to Germany later this year will no longer be deployed.
It is noted that Germany is the largest U.S. military base in Europe, with about 35,000 active-duty troops, and serves as a key training center. A senior Pentagon official said:
"The president has been very clear in expressing his frustration with the rhetoric of our allies and their failure to support U.S. operations that benefit them."
Trump and Merz conflict
Earlier this week, Trump threatened troop reductions after a conflict with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said the Iranians were humiliating the U.S. in negotiations to end the two-month war.
Trump singled out Germany while sharply criticizing other NATO allies for not sending their naval forces to help open the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict.
