How much will it cost.

The US Army is pressuring defense contractors to come up with proposals for a new interceptor missile for the Patriot surface-to-air missile system that would cost less than $1 million.

This is reported by The War Zone.

The new missile is expected to cost about five times less than the current generation Patriot PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement interceptors.

The cheaper alternative will improve the intercept-to-missile cost ratio of Patriot systems, especially against low-level threats such as drones and cruise missiles.

The new missile could also be produced on a large scale, which should help solve inventory and supply chain problems.

"We are pursuing a very aggressive competition to develop low-cost interceptor (LCI) missiles and missile subsystems," said Army Maj. Gen. Frank Lozano, the U.S. Army's executive director of acquisition.

The solicitation itself divides the target price of $1 million per unit into four groups of components, each of which must cost no more than $250,000. These are a low-cost interceptor with a fire control system, a missile engine, a homing head, and a fire control and flight guidance system.

The new low-cost air defense missile is reportedly intended not to replace, but to complement existing variants of the Patriot system. At the same time, not all threats require something like the PAC-3 MSE.
