Fires In Washington Destroyed Hundreds Of Buildings

In Washington State (U.S.), approximately 60,000 residents of Spokane were evacuated due to massive wildfires. The fires destroyed more than 600 buildings. This was reported on August 3 by NBC News.

No casualties have been reported as a result of the fires. Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown called the fires “the worst natural disaster” the region has ever experienced.

Washington State Senator Maria Kentwell stated that the fires were the result of a “historic weather event.” According to the National Weather Service, strong north-northwesterly winds of up to 56 km/h and extremely dry conditions contributed to the rapid spread of the fires.

State Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency, banning most types of open burning and agricultural burning. He also reported that the state had requested emergency assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). According to the governor, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his support for the state’s residents during a phone call.

According to State Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Aptegrove, a total of 15 wildfires are raging in Washington, having already burned approximately 101,000 hectares.
