A Two-headed Turtle Was Born In The U.S.

An unusual hatchling of a rare diamondback terrapin was born in the U.S. state of Massachusetts—it has two heads. The baby weighs just 5.2 grams, and veterinarians are currently monitoring its development, appetite, and behavior. This was reported by People.

The baby diamondback terrapin was found in a protected nesting area in the town of Wellfleet. Afterward, staff from the local conservation society turned it over to specialists at the Wildlife Center.

According to experts, the two heads are the result of a rare developmental anomaly called bicéphalie. It occurs when an embryo begins to split, but the process is not fully completed.

Such cases are extremely rare. Over the past five years, specialists at the center have encountered only two other two-headed turtles.

One of them was discovered on Cape Cod in 2021. The reptile had not only two heads but also six legs. However, it is difficult to predict how long turtles with such anomalies can live.

Rhomboid turtles inhabit the brackish coastal waters of the U.S. East Coast. In Massachusetts, this species is protected.
