Bloomberg Has Learned About The U.S. Pressure On Kiev Over Belarusian Fertilizers

US urges Ukraine to ease restrictions.

The United States is putting pressure on the Ukrainian authorities in order to get their help in easing the EU restrictions on the transit of potash fertilizers from Belarus. This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to sources.

They say that Washington believes that the removal of European barriers will contribute to some distance between Minsk and Moscow. In addition, the administration of US President Donald Trump seeks to restore ties with dictator Alexander Lukashenko.

The sources say that the EU restrictions make any weakening of ties between Belarus and Russia impossible, since Minsk cannot use the Baltic Sea coast of European countries for exports and has to rely solely on Russian ports and railroads.

At the same time, the agency's interlocutors specify, Washington has warned the Belarusian authorities that any possible cancellation of the regr Minsk of Russia in the war in Ukraine or arrests in extremism cases, and that sanctions could be reinstated at any time.

Bloomberg also adds that last week Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said during a closed-door meeting of the ruling party that Lithuania and other countries in the region were beginning to feel pressure from the United States over the transit of Belarusian potash fertilizers.

At the same time, the sources note, there are no signs at the moment that the EU is going to ease its restrictions on Belarus.
