For the fifth time, it was not possible to agree on a strategic goal with Xi.

The head of the Kremlin came to Beijing with a specific task - to get Chinese leader Si Jinping to agree to the construction of a new gas pipeline. But the talks ended with no agreement - and no specific timeline.

According to The Washington Post.

What the pipeline is and why Russia needs it

The pipeline in question is the Siberia-2 Power Pipeline, a massive pipeline that would pump up to 50 billion cubic meters of gas to China every year. This is critical for Russia: after the loss of the European market, Moscow is looking for new sales destinations.

But Beijing is in no hurry. China is satisfied with the current state of affairs - Russia depends on it and sells gas on terms favorable to Beijing.

What the Kremlin said after the talks

The Kremlin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that there are no specific terms for the start of the project.

"In fact, the president said during the talks that there is already a common understanding of the main parameters of the Siberia-2 Force. There is an understanding of the route and how it will be built. Some details still require final agreement, but in general there is already such an understanding," Peskov said.

China supported Moscow's position on Ukraine

In the same joint statement, Beijing endorsed the demand to eliminate the "root causes" of the war, a formulation Moscow uses to describe the elimination of a pro-Western government and prevent Ukraine from joining NATO.

So China effectively endorsed the Kremlin's position on the aims of the war against Ukraine.

Partnership with cracks

Beyond the lavish reception, serious problems remain in the two countries' relations. Russia is unhappy that Chinese companies are supplying components for Ukrainian drone production - while continuing to trade with Russia itself.

In addition, Western officials say Russia is investigating at least one case of possible Chinese espionage. Both sides prefer not to publicize the case.
