Trump's party is shocked at the withdrawal of troops from Germany.
US President Donald Trump has faced unexpected opposition within his own party over plans to weaken the US presence in Europe. Leading Republicans have come out strongly against the president's intention to withdraw the US contingent from Germany, which is a key NATO ally.
This is reported by Newsweek.
Trump's party believes that such a move would unleash the Kremlin. Reducing forces in Europe would be a fatal mistake and undermine the system of collective deterrence against aggression.
"We are very concerned about the decision to withdraw the U.S. brigade from Germany," said Senator Roger Wicker and Representative Mike Rogers.
Wicker chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, while Rogers chairs a similar body in the House of Representatives. In their view, Washington has no right to show weakness.
"Prematurely reducing America's forward presence in Europe before those capabilities are fully realized risks undermining deterrence and sending the wrong message to Vladimir Putin," the lawmakers said in a full statement.
An alternative plan: moving east
The lawmakers suggest not taking soldiers home, but redeploying them closer to a potential front. That would strengthen the security of allies that directly border Russia.
The Republican Party says the U.S. should remain the leader of the defense alliance. A weakened position in Germany could provoke Russia to escalate again in the war against Ukraine.
Political pressure and the war in Iran
Criticism from associates comes amid another conflict - the war in Iran. That campaign has been going on for three months and it is highly unpopular with voters, the publication notes.
According to an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, the situation for the White House looks bleak:
61% of Americans believe the start of the war in Iran was a mistake;
79% of Republicans overall still support Trump;
Only 50% of Republicans who do not belong to the MAGA movement, however, approve of his actions.
With MAGA supporters, support remains high at 86%.
