This is a completely new form of matter, unlike anything scientists have ever seen before.

Chinese physicists claim to have obtained the most compelling evidence yet for the existence of the gluon—after nearly 50 years of searching for it. This is an entirely new form of matter, unlike anything scientists have ever encountered. According to the Standard Model of particle physics, gluobols should exist, and they consist solely of gluons—the carriers of the strong interaction. The research results have been published on the arXiv preprint server, reports ScienceAlert.

All matter visible to us consists of atoms. Their nuclei contain protons and neutrons. Each of these consists of three quarks. Gluons are massless particles that mediate the strong interaction, just as photons—particles of light—mediate the electromagnetic force. Gluons bind quarks together, as well as protons and neutrons. Physicists have long believed that, according to the Standard Model of particle physics, there must be an elementary particle consisting solely of gluons. It has been named the gluonball.

Now, Chinese physicists have announced that they have the most compelling evidence that the gluonball exists. It is the only particle in nature that consists solely of the carriers of one of the four fundamental forces.

Two years ago, Chinese physicists conducted an experiment at the BEPC II particle accelerator at the Institute of High Energy Physics in Beijing, in which electrons and positrons were collided (which are the antimatter counterparts of electrons). At that time, the scientists obtained evidence that the previously discovered particle X(2370) is a gluon. The results of the new experiments provide even more evidence for this.

Physicists say that the discovered gluon is an “unprecedented form of matter” and that its discovery significantly expands the boundaries of our understanding of the physical world. Physicists are 90% certain that they have discovered the gluon, a particle that scientists have been searching for for nearly 50 years. However, additional experiments are needed to definitively confirm this new discovery.
