Strike On Novorossiysk: The "Admiral Makarov" And "Admiral Essen" Sustain Severe Damage

Russia has lost two "Kalibr" launchers.

Following the Ukrainian attack on a Russian naval base in Novorossiysk on August 12, two frigates of the Russian Federation’s Black Sea Fleet—“Admiral Makarov” and “Admiral Essen”—sustained serious damage.

Both ships, which are equipped with “Kalibr” cruise missiles, are no longer capable of fully carrying out combat missions and may require at least a year of repairs, according to Om TV.

The “Admiral Essen” sustained the most severe damage to its bow. The strike caused the deck to deform and destroyed the eight-cell UKSK 3S14 module—a universal ship-based launch system designed, among other things, to launch “Kalibr” cruise missiles.

Consequently, the frigate lost the ability to use its primary weapons.

In addition, the “Trebovanie-M” combat information and control system was rendered inoperable. The damage also affected the antenna masts of the radar systems, electronic warfare equipment, and satellite communications systems.

As for the “Admiral Makarov,” the hit struck the area of the vertical launch systems.

This resulted in an internal detonation, after which the 3S14 UKSK launch tubes were burned out.

Damage of this nature directly affects the ship’s missile armament and significantly limits its combat capabilities.

In addition to the launchers, the control systems, radar equipment, electronic warfare systems, and communications systems sustained serious damage.

According to preliminary estimates, both of the aforementioned ships may be taken out of service for at least a year.
