Unusual Traffic Lights Have Appeared That Encourage Drivers

Good behavior is rewarded with "green."

In the West, an unusual traffic light system is being tested that is designed to encourage drivers to obey speed limits. Instead of fines, the technology offers a simple reward—an earlier green light, according to Autoblog.

The system has been named “rest in red”—“stop at red.” In normal mode, the traffic light is red, and special sensors monitor the speed of an approaching vehicle. If the driver is traveling at or below the speed limit, they get a green light sooner.

Rushing may result in an extra wait at the intersection. The creators of the idea hope this will encourage drivers to slow down.

Initial tests have shown encouraging results. At one intersection, the average speed of vehicles dropped to within the speed limit. In other locations, authorities reported a noticeable reduction in the number of traffic accidents.

“Sometimes punishing violators may be less effective than rewarding drivers who follow the rules,” the authors write.

A 2023 study also demonstrated the effectiveness of a similar system. After its round-the-clock implementation on five roads, the number of traffic accidents fell by 43%.

However, the technology can also create new problems. If one driver exceeds the speed limit, other motorists may get a red light even if they are following the rules themselves. In addition, many drivers still do not understand why the traffic light works this way.
