Alyaksandr Kazulin , political prisoner

A former candidate for presidency in the Republic of Belarus Alyaksandr Kazulin was hurled into prison for staging protest rallies against rigging of presidential elections on Freedom day March 25, 2006. July 12 Minsk city court sentenced Alyaksandr Kazulin to 5.5 years of imprisonment. In prison Alyaksandr Kazulin announced a hunger strike, demanding to consider the Belarusian problem in the UN Security Council. The political prisoner was on hunger strike for 53 days and reduced by more than 40 kilograms. His health has been irreparably damaged. The courageous politician achieved his aim. A US representative brought up the problem of Belarus in the UN Security Council.

    “We hoped that after release of political prisoners Zmitser Dashkevich, Artur Finkevich, Mikalay Autukhovich and Yury Lyavonau our father would be released too. But unfortunately, our hopes have failed,” a daughter of the former presidential candidate, political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin (Kozulin), Volha Kazulina, told to the Charter’97 press-center after her meeting with her father in the corrective labour detention facility “Vitsba-3”.

    The release of all political prisoners by the Belarusian authorities is an “unfaltering” demand of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), PACE President Lluis Maria de Puig said in an interview to BelaPAN. The politician stressed that the recent early release of Dzmitry Dashkevich and Artur Finkevich, both members of an unregistered opposition youth group Malady Front, “has not gone unnoticed.” He expressed hope that the release was part of “a pattern of conclusive and consistent signs that the Belarusian leadership is prepared to get closer to Europe.”

    On November 13, in the framework of the international campaign of solidarity with Alyaksandr Kazulin, a political prisoner, an address to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe was sent. As said by the former lawyer of the convicted politician, Ihar Rynkevich, the document had been prepared by the public commission “Free Kazulin!” to the benefit of all Belarusian political prisoners.

    24 October the deputies of the Belarusian “palatka” (house of representatives) began the consideration of the draft law “On amnesty”. It will be the fifth amnesty in the country within the last seven years. Today Aliaksandr Kazulin, Andrei Klimau, Zmiter Dashkevich, Artur Finkevich, Mikola Autukhovich and Yury Liavonau are in prison accused on political motives. The normalization of the relations with Europe depends on how their fate will be determined.
