General Prosecutor’s Office insists on sentence to Kazulin

The General Prosecutor’s Office refused to appeal against the sentence to former candidate for presidency political prisoner Aliaksandr Kazulin. Aliaksandr Kazulin’s lawyer knew it from the letter from the General Prosecutor’s Office.

“We have the last opportunity for protest – a supervisory complaint to Valiantina Sukala, head of the Supreme Court. This complaint will be sent today. If it is not granted, we will appeal to international institutions,” Igar Rynkevich, former lawyer of the candidate for presidency, said to Radio Svaboda.

It should be reminded that lawyer Zmiter Garachka sent an appeal to the General Prosecutor’s Office asking to protest against the sentence to Kazulin more than two months ago. Aliaksandr Kazulin was sentenced by the court of Maskouski District to 5.5 years of imprisonment for organisation of mass protest actions against ballot-rigging on presidential election 2006.

But Prosecutor General Piotr Miklashevich thinks the sentence was lawful. Earlier, the decision of Maskouski district Court was confirmed by Minsk City Court.

It should be reminded that the USA requires the Belarusian authorities to stop repressions and release all political prisoners. The US Treasury Ministry froze the assets of Belarusian state concern Belneftekhim.

“Until the political prisoners are released, the USA will continue imposing sanctions,” David Kramer, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian affairs, commented the sanction introducing.
