Britain Will Allocate Nearly $1 Billion To Build A National AI Supercomputer

It is expected to be one of the most advanced in the world.

The UK government will allocate £750 million to build a national supercomputer equipped with artificial intelligence (AI). The UK Department for Science announced this on its website.

“£750 million has been allocated for a new national supercomputer for artificial intelligence, including £400 million for the purchase of next-generation AI chips, of which £150 million is a preliminary agreement to purchase innovative chips from startups and British companies,” the statement said.

The ministry added that the supercomputer is scheduled to become operational in 2030. It is expected to be one of the most advanced in the world. The technology will be developed in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh. A tender for the project will be announced shortly.

In May, Russian scientists proposed a new quantum computer design based on ultracold polar molecules. According to the researchers’ calculations, this technology will enable the creation of more powerful quantum processors capable of accelerating the simulation of chemical reactions, the development of new drugs and materials, and the solution of problems that are beyond the capabilities of modern supercomputers.
