The pro-European party "Civic Contract" won nearly 50% of the vote.

The world is hailing the victory of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s “Civic Contract” party in the parliamentary elections. On Monday, June 8, European Union leaders congratulated Pashinyan on his election success. The EU highly values its partnership with democratic Armenia, which is growing ever closer to Europe, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on social media, reports DW.

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, speaking at a meeting of EU defense ministers in Cyprus, emphasized that the people of Armenia have chosen a European future despite strong pressure from Russia. European Council President António Costa praised Armenia’s choice of a future based on peace, stability, and closer cooperation with its neighbors and the rest of the world.

Germany, France, and Poland welcomed the Armenians’ choice

Along with other European heads of state and government, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz congratulated Pashinyan and the people of Armenia on the election results. “Despite enormous pressure, the people of Armenia have made a clear choice in favor of democracy and peace. I look forward to further deepening our bilateral cooperation with Armenia, as well as our engagement within the European framework,” he wrote on X.

French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that he looks forward to continuing joint efforts “to further strengthen cooperation for the benefit of our peoples, to support peace and Armenia’s sovereignty, and to develop closer ties with Europe”. Macron posted the statement on X in both French and Armenian.

“The people of Armenia have chosen democracy, stability, and a future increasingly linked to Europe,” said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed confidence that “Armenia has chosen continuity and reaffirmed its pro-European course.”

Zelenskyy urged the EU not to waste time

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the election results “a victory for Armenia’s sovereignty,” its independence, and its right to live as it sees fit. In particular, he addressed the EU: “Now is the time for the European Union to truly support Armenia and do everything necessary so that people feel that life is better thanks to relations with Europe. This is a test for the European Union. It is important not to waste time or opportunities”.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar noted that Pashinyan “has demonstrated leadership in advancing his country on the path to peace and reconciliation with Azerbaijan,” and that this will contribute to regional stability and cooperation. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Pashinyan “on his party’s impressive victory” and expressed hope for close cooperation “to further strengthen the warm, historically established ties of friendship and cooperation between India and Armenia.” The Armenian prime minister was also congratulated by the leaders of Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Moldova.

Moscow accused Yerevan of pressuring pro-Russian forces

Meanwhile, Moscow accused Yerevan of pressuring pro-Russian forces and the EU of interfering in the elections. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova expressed confidence that there is a demand in Armenia for developing ties with Russia and the country’s continued participation in “Eurasian integration structures.”

Furthermore, according to Zakharova, the Armenian authorities are “exclusively” targeting those parties that advocate strengthening ties with Russia and abandoning the course toward EU accession. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson called the Armenian people “brotherly” and wished them peace and prosperity. “As for Moscow’s future policy toward Armenia, we intend to shape our course taking into account the actual steps taken by the Armenian leadership,” the statement reads.

Pashinyan’s pro-European party won nearly 50% of the vote

The party of pro-Western Prime Minister Pashinyan won a decisive victory in the June 7 parliamentary elections in Armenia. According to the country’s Central Election Commission, 49.8% of voters voted for the “Civic Contract”. The pro-Russian “Strong Armenia” bloc, led by Russian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, who is of Armenian descent, received 23.3% of the vote.

Another bloc of opposition forces—"Armenia," led by former President Robert Kocharyan—received 9.94% of the vote, while businessman Gagik Tsarukyan’s "Prosperous Armenia" party received 4%. As a result, “Civic Contract” will receive 61 seats, “Strong Armenia” 28 seats, “Armenia” 11 seats, and “Prosperous Armenia” 5 seats. Voter turnout was 58.97%—higher than in the 2018 and 2021 elections. In the previous parliamentary elections, Pashinyan’s party received nearly 54% of the vote.
