Forbes: Russia Sacrificed 99,000 Soldiers To Capture One Small District In Chasiv Yar

The Kremlin appears to have missed its last chance.

On April 4, Russian troops launched an attack on Chasiv Yar, a Ukrainian stronghold in eastern Ukraine located west of the ruins of Bakhmut. Three months later, this week they captured the city's most vulnerable area, the canal area, at the cost of thousands of Russian soldiers. Forbes writes about this.

According to journalists, since the beginning of the campaign in Chasiv Yar, the Russian military has lost 99,000 troops. Although not all of them died near Chasiv Yar, a significant number of them suffered in this region.

“Russia has made some progress on the ground and yet even this has come at massive costs,” commented Mick Ryan, a retired Australian army general. Having wasted so many lives for so little gain, Russia "appears to have missed its last chance to deliver the decisive blow to Ukraine in this war," Ryan added.

The Ukrainian garrison in Chasiv Yar continues to fight. Ukrainian army speaker Nazar Voloshyn said the garrison retreated several blocks west across the Siversky Donets-Donbas Canal as Russian bombs and artillery destroyed all buildings in the canal area.

According to the article, some may be surprised that the Ukrainian garrison, led by the 41st and 67th Mechanized Brigades, the 56th Motorized Brigade, the 5th Assault Brigade and the 241st Territorial Defence Brigade, held out for so long in an isolated and vulnerable area of the canal.

Back at the end of May, the Ukrainian analytical group Frontelligence Insight predicted that Chasiv Yar would ultimately be lost but the Ukrainian troops held out for another 6 weeks.

According to the article, it helped that in mid-April the administration of US President Joe Biden resumed supplies of ammunition to Ukraine after the failure of a six-month effort by pro-Russian Republican lawmakers to refuse aid.

The Ukrainian defence has also been helped by the fact that Russian regiments and brigades have been weakened by heavy losses, although the Kremlin, albeit with difficulty, has been able to recruit fresh troops to replace the dead and wounded.

However, the rate of losses is forcing Moscow to send new troops to the front without proper leadership, training and gear. “Russia is unable to create better, larger forces that can carry out larger offensive operations,” Ryan explains.

That's is not an explanations for the Ukrainian soldiers defending Chasiv Yar. They fight block after block, regardless of the broader strategic context. More brutal bloc fighting is likely in Chasiv Yar as the Russians seek to expand their gains in one of the few places where they are making any progress at all, Forbes writes.

According to the Ukrainian Center for Defence Strategies, Russian troops will soon launch attacks across the Siversky Donets-Donbas Canal in the central part of Chasiv Yar from their positions in the canal area.
