Hillary Clinton and Catherine Ashton stand against Lukashenka

The United States and the European Union are concerned about attitude of the Belarusian authorities toward the opposition.

The remark was made by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton following her meeting with European Union High Representative for Foreign Common and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.

The head of the US Department of State said that situation in Belarus had been discussed at the meeting. The US and EU are “concerned about crackdown in Belarus”, Hillary Clinton stressed appraising the EU’s strong statement released over the weekend.

Hillary Clinton also said that Washington “considers the post-December 19th trials to be politically motivated”.

“We call for an immediate, unconditional release of all political prisoners,” Clinton added.

We remind that Andrei Sannikov, Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s rival at the presidential elections, has been sentenced to five years in a medium security penal colony by the Partyzanski district court of Minsk.
