Belarus may not be allowed to Olympic Games and Eurovision

This initiative was proposed by a member of the Seimas of Lithuania

Conservative Seimas member Egidijus Vareikis offers to impose “moral sanctions” on Belarus – expulsion the country from cultural and sports organization and a ban to participate in world’s and European championships, DELFI reports.

“Moral sanctions (expelling Belarus from cultural and sports organizations, banning from participating in international events, world’s championships, the Olympic Games or the Eurovision Song Contest) would be more effective than economic sanctions. The experience of sanctions against former Yugoslavia, South Africa and the USSR proves it,” the member of the Seimas Committee on European and Foreign Affairs said.

“The Belarusian dictator may become a “new Gorbachev” only if Europe becomes a “new Reagan” and the Belarusian society understands that only the regime in Minsk is to blame for economic sanctions,” the Seimas member said.

As Vareikis counts, there are a lot of people in Europe mistakenly supposing that they need to make concessions to the Belarusian authorities and betray values for the sake of economic benefits.

“The result of this policy is the loss of both values and economic benefit,” the member of parliament said.

The MP made this statement during the joint event in the Trakai district “Alternative Strategies of Participating of Youth in Politics” held by the Christian Democrats of Norway, the Institute of Development and Education (Educatio), and Belarusian Young Front.
