A Ukrainian F-16 Shot Down A Russian Fighter Jet For The First Time

A U.S. general made an unexpected statement.

A Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet shot down a Russian aircraft in aerial combat for the first time.

This was stated by General Dan Kane, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, during hearings before the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee.

During the hearing, Senator Richard Durbin asked Kane how a potential three-year suspension of funding for air defense systems might affect Ukraine.

In response, the general emphasized that Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex has significantly expanded its capabilities—from surface-to-air systems to air combat capabilities.

As an example, Kane cited a recent air battle, in which, he said, a Ukrainian F-16 shot down a Russian fighter jet for the first time.

“We recently witnessed the first aerial engagement in which a Ukrainian F-16 shot down a Russian fighter jet. Over the past few years, thanks to the support of many partners, Ukraine has significantly strengthened its layered defense system,” the general said.

Kane also added that, thanks to the help of its allies, Ukraine has substantially strengthened its multi-layered defense system and expanded its own military capabilities.

During the hearings, the general was also asked directly who he wanted to see emerge victorious in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

“I want Ukraine to win,” Kane replied.

When asked whether Russia is a friend of the United States, the general replied that it is a “complex relationship” and added that he does not consider Russia a friend of America.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Air Force had not previously reported shooting down a Russian fighter jet using an F-16.
