Media discussing moving Ice Hockey Championship from Belarus to Sweden and Finland

Svenska Dagbladet writes it will be  a real disgrace for sport if the championship is hosted by a dictatorial country.

The newspaper thinks it would be better to move the 2014 championship to Sweden and Finland, the country hosting the IIHF championship this year and the next year.

These countries already have the infrastructure necessary for this kind of events. Championships in Sweden and Finland are highly praised both by sports experts and fans, Radio Svaboda reports.

Svenska Dagbladet notes Belarus today is a strict dictatorship. “The country is ruled by a tyrant, who wants to suppress the whole opposition. However, he finds time to have ice hockey training three times a week. To give him an opportunity to beam in the rays of the world championship is grotesque.”

“The International Ice Hockey Federation and its leaders still have time to change their wrong decision and order Sweden and Finland to hold the world championship for the third year in succession,” the Swedish newspaper sums up.
