Activist to be tried for picket against Russian air bases

UCP member Mikalai Hladyshau will stand trial on September 15.

Mikalai Hladyshau from Mahilou, a member of the United Civil Party, held a one-man picket against setting up a Russian air base in Belarus. He will be tried on September 15.

The activist received a summons to appear in the Leninskski district court as an offender. According to a police report, Hladyshau is charged with violating the law on holding mass events, Radio Svaboda reports.

Mikalai Hladyshau organised a protest picket in front of the city executive committee. In accordance with the police report, Hladyshau didn't have permission for holding a picket, but expressed in public his protest against setting up foreign military bases in Belarus”.

The activist is going to attend the trial, but he doesn't think he is guilty.

“Belarus must have only the bases of the Belarusian Armed Forces. No foreign military bases. It violates the constitution of Belarus that says Belarus is a neutral country,” Mikalai Hladyshau says.
