Nick And Mike: Lukashenka Regime Faces ‘Hellish Sanctions’ From ILO

All previous restrictions will seem like a mosquito bite in comparison.

Continuing the theme of the ILO. Today it is difficult to say what kind of sanctions will be imposed on the Belarusian junta in the future. The practice in this regard of the oldest organization of the UN system is not rich, but very painful, writes the Nick and Mike Telegram channel.

The decision on Myanmar, which can be found here (though in English), to revise relations with this state led to the fact that the country, led by the local junta, found itself in an international economic blockade.

For the Belarusian junta, which is critically dependent on foreign trade, this will be an economic blow, compared with which all previous sanctions taken together are nothing more than a mosquito bite.

It was the threat of imposing sanctions in accordance with article 33 that slowed down the demolition of the remnants of trade unions in 2022 for some time. But only for as long as it took for the threat to pass. After the lobbyists from the “independent” trade unions averted the threat of hellish sanctions, they immediately became unnecessary and were promptly destroyed. Once again, the choice between war and shame led to both shame and war.

The question of the specific scope of sanctions and the timing of their introduction will be considered in the spring of 2023. But the threat itself will already now force foreign contractors to reconsider economic relations with the junta.

The junta is becoming as toxic as its remaining friends — Myanmar, Iran, which decided that there was nothing left to lose and resolved to execute 14 thousand people, demonstrating that trembling authoritarian regimes, no matter the region, sooner or later fall into political repression, war or genocide. The blue-fingered junta has been moving on this track since 2020 with increasing speed.

Which, obviously, requires solutions at the international level, beyond “concerns” of varying degrees. However, according to our insiders, the decision for the spring of 2023 regarding the junta has been made. And here we are talking not only about the ILO sanctions.
