Became Known Sentencing Date In Zeltser's Widow Case

The court decision on the criminal case against political prisoner Marya Uspenskaia will be announced at the Minsk City Court at 12:00 on June 16. According to human rights activists, the sentencing hearing will be public. The court considered her case in a closed hearing.

Uspenskaia is the widow of Andrei Zeltser. She is accused of complicity in the murder of a KGB officer Dmitry Fedosyuk under Part 2 of Article 139 of the Criminal Code. Since May 31, Judge Valentyna Zenkevich has considered the trial.

She is tried as "a person who has committed a socially dangerous act under the criminal law in a state of insanity or has become mentally ill after committing a crime" (Paragraph 13 of Article 6 of the Сode of Сriminal Procedure). Her mother represents her interests in court, Maria herself is absent from the process. She does not face criminal punishment, but will be subject to coercive security measures and treatment.

Although, June 15 is Marya Uspenskaia's birthday: she turns 41 years old.

The woman was detained in September 2021 right after her husband opened fire on KGB officers who were breaking into their apartment. A KGB officer and Zeltser himself were killed in a shooting.
