Duda: Poland To Seek Release Of Belarusian Political Prisoners

Polish president calls for tougher sanctions against Lukashenka's regime.

Polish President Andrzej Duda has spoken about Warsaw's approach to Belarus. The Polish president made the remarks at a meeting with the Polish diplomatic community:

- As long as Lukashenka is in charge of Belarus, Polish diplomacy should treat it as a state responsible for Putin's war. That is why we must strive in international forums to impose and strengthen all possible sanctions against this country.

At the same time, Duda said, we should remember the Belarusian people, who, unlike the Russians, "are not poisoned by the spirit of imperialism, they have a friendly attitude towards Poland and Poles":

- We must show solidarity with the people of Belarus! We must remember the more than one thousand political prisoners in Belarus and the repression of Poles living in that country. The unjust conviction of Andrzej Poczobut has become a harsh symbol of this repression. We will therefore work in international fora to secure the release of all political prisoners and to strengthen the restrictive measures against Belarus.

He expressed satisfaction that his country was actively supporting civil society in Belarus and helping to create conditions for the development of democracy and political dialogue:

- It is in our interest to promote and strengthen the Belarusian diaspora and its independent political circles in other countries as well. We should support them. It is our neighbourly, civic duty as a Solidarity country, as a country whose society once managed to defeat communism without firing a single shot, thus contributing to the final collapse of the Soviet Union.
