In response to the transfer of Russian nuclear weapons to Belarus.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced the country's intention to join NATO's Nuclear Sharing program, under which countries that do not have their own nuclear weapons can receive corresponding American ones.

“Due to the fact that Russia intends to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, we ask the entire NATO alliance to take part in the Nuclear Sharing program,” Mateusz Morawiecki said on June 30 in Brussels after the European Council summit. He is quoted by the Polish edition polsatnews.pl.

At the same time, he added that the final decision on Poland's access to American nuclear weapons would depend on the United States and NATO partners.

“We declare our desire to act quickly in this regard,” the Polish Prime Minister emphasized.

Mateusz Morawiecki added that Poland does not want to “sit idle while Putin builds up all sorts of threats”.

Nuclear Sharing is a NATO program that is part of the nuclear deterrence. The program makes nuclear warheads available to alliance states that do not have their own nuclear weapons. Since November 2009, as part of Nuclear Sharing, American nuclear weapons have been located in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.
