Belarus Ranks Fourth In The World Regarding Imprisoned Journalists Number

There are 40 of them.

Belarus ranks fourth in the world in terms of the number of imprisoned journalists, last year it was third). There are 40 of them (at the end of 2023 there were 39). The largest number of journalists behind bars is in China — 124. This is stated in the annual report of the human rights organization Reporters Without Borders.

There are 550 journalists in prisons around the world (7% more than in 2023). This year, 72 journalists were sentenced to imprisonment. Their total term is more than 250 years. The day before, the trial of political prisoner journalist Ihar Karney began in Belarus.

54 journalists were killed this year in connection with the performance of their professional duties. This is the lowest figure in the last 20 years.

Belarus ranked 167th in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index, which Reporters Without Borders released in May. It noted that Russia (162nd) continues its “crusade against independent journalism,” and that “only two countries compete with Russia in this zone: Belarus (167th), whose regime persecutes journalists under the pretext of fighting “extremism”, and Turkmenistan (175th), where the president, with unlimited powers, bans any independent information.”

In the 2023 index, Belarus ranked 157th, in 2022 — 153rd.
