Coup d'Etat In Bolivia: Army Occupies Key Government Buildings

A tank entered the territory of the presidential palace.

Bolivian President Luis Arce condemned the "extraordinary mobilisation" of several military units in the city of La Paz, while former President Evo Morales accused the generals of attempting to organize a military coup, Reuters reports.

Social media also published photos and videos of military vehicles occupying the city's central square, as well as footage of the military entering the government palace.

"We are calling for a national mobilisation to defend democracy amid the coup d'état led by General (Juan Jose) Suniga," Morales said.

General Suniga himself, whom Arce had earlier sent into retirement, said the three armed forces commanders had expressed their dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in the country.

"There will be a new cabinet, things will certainly change, but our country cannot go on living like this," he said on local television.

The Bolivian army occupied key government buildings and a tank entered the presidential palace, local media wrote.

In light of the situation in Bolivia, Honduran President Xiomara Castro called an emergency meeting of CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean Countries).

A previous coup attempt was carried out in Bolivia in 2019 due to allegations of electoral fraud against Morales.

After the Organisation of American States (OAS) acknowledged the fraud, Morales received a warning from Armed Forces Commander Williams Caliman. Caliman was later sentenced to prison time for attempting to participate in the coup.
