The Economist: Biden To Continue Presidential Race
JOE BIDEN

Despite the failed debates.

The current US President Joe Biden will not withdraw from the current presidential campaign, despite a failed performance in the first debate with former White House chief of staff Donald Trump. This is stated in the article by The Economist.

The publication notes that Biden's performance during the presidential debate on June 27 cast doubt on his candidacy. However, in the following days, the campaign tried to "save" the incumbent, and so far it has succeeded.

"Since Mr Biden had already gained credibility from his party, he would have to be persuaded that his candidacy was untenable. If a revolt had broken out among his fellow Democrats, that might have happened. However, the deadening among Democrats in Congress and in the various governor's mansions held sway. Even the back benchers were hesitant to come out and say publicly what they worry about," the article says.

The authors believe that Biden will still run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Since, "unlike in parliamentary elections, there is no real mechanism to remove him."

"Mr Biden and his deputies have realised that the fear of a split if he backs down is for now enough to keep the party in line. So the president appears to have learned a lesson from his enemy, Mr Trump, who has realised that if he simply ignores his party's calls to back down in moments of crisis, they will all end up in a queue. Right now, the Democratic Party is paralysed by the unrecoverable costs of re-electing a president, the lack of a charismatic vice-president and, above all, the fear that dissent will only benefit Mr Trump's chances. That will probably work well for the president's own party. Yet it is a flawed strategy for persuading voters," the publication concludes.
