Lithuanian Prime Minister: There Will Be No Concessions, We Will Close The Border With Belarus
Inga Ruginenė

A clear signal was sent to the Belarusian regime.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginenė said that if incidents of mass launching of smuggled balloons from Belarus continue, the country will completely close the border, LRT reports.

"If mass crossing of our border by such balloons happens again, we will react immediately and close the border with Belarus," the head of the government told reporters on Wednesday after a meeting of the National Security Commission.

"There will be no concessions to Belarus in this matter," she added.

Ruginenė said that initially the decision to close the border for one day could be made by the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), after which it would apply to the government to extend the decision.

"We will spare no time for this. A clear message is being sent to our neighbors - we will not look calmly at such actions," the prime minister said.

On Tuesday night to Wednesday, several dozen smuggled balloons flew into Lithuania.

Because of this, the operation of Vilnius airport was disrupted, affecting about 30 flights and more than 4,000 passengers, and the Medininkai and Šalčininkai checkpoints were temporarily closed.

According to the prime minister, other measures are also planned: tougher liability for smuggling activities, as well as discussions with Lithuanian businesses on technical ways to prevent such balloons from entering the country.

"By Friday, the interior minister has pledged to submit a proposal on technological means by which SIM cards installed with the balloons can be blocked," Ruginenė said.

A regular meeting of the National Security Commission is scheduled for next week to assess the progress of the balloons," Ruginenė said.
