Ireland's New President Has Officially Taken Office

Presidential elections were held in Ireland in October.
Ireland's new President Catherine Connolly officially took office as head of state on November 11. The inauguration was broadcast live by RTE TV channel.
"In the face of Almighty God, I, Catherine Connolly, solemnly and sincerely promise and confirm that I will support and defend the constitution of Ireland, respect its laws, conscientiously and consciously perform my duties," the politician said during the ceremony.
The inauguration was also attended by Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin and other members of the cabinet, as well as members of the opposition and judges.
The presidential election was held in Ireland in October. Despite the Fine Gael party being part of the ruling coalition in Ireland, their candidate Heather Humphries was unable to beat Connolly in this election.
Connolly, however, said she was very pleased when she addressed voters after the preliminary vote count.
