The political prisoner turns 46 today.
Yauhen Afnahel was born on February 7, 1979. He graduated from the History Department of the Belarusian State Pedagogical University named after Maksim Tank.
According to Yauhen, his father brought him to the first rally - it was the rally at Dziady in 1989.
The grandfather of one of the European Belarus leaders took an active part in the activities of the Minsk underground during the Second World War. In 1942 he founded an underground printing house in Troitski suburb, published and distributed newspapers and leaflets.
Yauhen Afnahel was at the origin of the Zubr opposition movement, one of the leaders of the European Belarus.
After the events of 2010 he was in forced exile for several years. Then he returned to Belarus and became one of the leaders of the resistance. He was repeatedly detained and served administrative arrests.
Yauhen Afnahel was detained once again on September 25, 2020. The door of his flat was broken out.
On May 25, Afnagel was sentenced to 7 years in a reinforced regime colony. The trial against Pavel Seviarynets and European Belarus activists was held behind closed doors.
Yauhen Afnahel is under pressure in the colony: on January 19, 2022, he was thrown into the punitive isolation ward for 10 days. After his release, he told his relatives that he would soon be placed there again. The political prisoner spent a month and a half in the punitive isolation cell and in early March wrote to his wife that he was placed in the punitive isolation cell for about a month and then was going to be transferred to a "covered" prison for three years.
On April 12, 2022, Navapolatsk court Judge Iryna Zharava ruled to transfer Yauhen Afnahel to a prison regime for 2 years. The trial was held via video link from the colony. The political prisoner was transferred from Penal Colony No. 1 to Mahiliou Prison No. 4.
