Photos of a smoking ship off the coast of Sochi, Russia, in the Krasnodar Krai have appeared on social media. The website dialog.ua, citing the Ukrainian OSINT project Exilenova+, reports that there has long been a threat of attack by strike UAVs of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, which patrol the area and target any vessels associated with Russian transport infrastructure.
It is precisely this part of the water area is constantly attacked by units under Robert “Madyar” Brovdi and other Ukrainian drone forces, which systematically target Russian logistics, port infrastructure, and vessels.
The photos were taken from a great distance; the vessel is practically on the horizon, where the elongated silhouette of a large commercial ship is clearly visible—judging by its flat deck and distinctive shape, it is a dry cargo ship, bulk carrier, or tanker.
A thick plume of dark smoke rises from the stern of the vessel, where the bridge and engine room are traditionally located.
Aerial drones usually target the superstructure (the bridge) to destroy navigation systems and the crew. The fire in the photo is engulfing precisely this vertical area above the stern. Unmanned kamikaze boats most often target the stern to destroy the propeller and rudder assembly and render the ship unseaworthy, or strike the engine room area to ensure flooding or disablement.
A strike to the stern causes a severe fire in this part of the ship.
The main objective of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is to restrict Russia’s safe maneuvering space in the Black Sea and to block the operation of ports that could be used for resupply and military logistics.
In recent weeks, the Sochi area has increasingly found itself under pressure from Ukrainian drones.
