German General Michael Traut issued this warning.

Russian military satellites could pose a threat to Elon Musk’s Starlink even without a direct attack. This was stated by the head of the German Space Forces Command, Major General Michael Traut, in an interview Reuters.

The cause for concern was an incident in May, when four Russian military satellites came close to a commercial satellite operated by the Finnish company ICEYE. The company provides radar imagery to Ukraine and its allies to monitor the situation on the front lines. According to the U.S. Space Force, the Russian satellites followed the satellite and maneuvered close to it.

“Russia is demonstrating capabilities that, if used against a large constellation like Starlink, could shorten the satellites’ service life and degrade communication quality for all users,” Traut said.

Moscow may employ pressure tactics without launching an overt attack. For example, a Russian satellite could approach a Starlink satellite and then break up in orbit. To avoid colliding with debris, the satellites would have to change course and burn fuel, shortening their operational life.

“This worries me greatly,” the German general emphasized.

ICEYE also believes that the incident demonstrated just how close spacecraft can now come to one another—both for observation and for the potential to cause harm.

Russia has not disclosed the capabilities of its “Kosmos” series satellites, and the Russian Ministry of Defense did not respond to questions from Reuters. SpaceX also declined to comment on the situation.

In response to these new threats, Germany is developing inspection satellites and exploring the possibility of creating orbital countermeasures capable of disrupting enemy spacecraft without destroying them.
