Putin's "mistress" was identified by her phone number.
Russian media report that a Telegram account has been registered using a phone number linked to Alina Kabaeva. “‘We Can Explain’ writes that this occurred against the backdrop of restrictions on the messaging app in Russia and Vladimir Putin’s statements about the dangers of communication channels not controlled by the country.
Journalists linked the number to Kabayeva based on leaked data: it is listed in her accounts on “Gosuslugi” and the Moscow healthcare portal. Additionally, the publication cross-referenced the information with records in the Numbuster app.
The same phone number appeared in purchase records at the TsUM department store.
According to “MO,” the purchases were made by Elena Erkhan, whom the publication describes as a close aide to Kabayeva. The article does not specify who exactly registered the Telegram account or who uses it.
Restrictions on Telegram in Russia were tightened in stages: first, they affected specific features, including calls; then, the messenger’s operation as a whole. In February 2026, Roskomnadzor officially announced restrictions on the service.
In March, during a meeting between Putin and female military personnel, communications specialist Irina Godunova called Telegram an “enemy communication channel” and suggested improving the Russian messaging app Max. She is the one who coined this phrase. Putin agreed with the concerns regarding communication systems not controlled by Russia, stating that they pose a threat to the military.
Thus, an account linked to Kabayeva’s phone number appeared on a service whose use the Russian authorities restrict for the country’s residents.
