WP: There Is Another Version Of The Assassination Attempt On General Alekseev In Moscow
Vladimir Alexeev

A GRU general paid for his role at the start of the war.

Ukraine is unlikely to be involved in the assassination attempt on Russian general Vladimir Alekseev, who was shot in the back by an unknown assailant in Moscow. This is according to The Washington Post, citing anonymous sources.

The publication notes that the Kremlin, although it blamed Ukraine for everything, as is its old habit, has not provided any evidence of this. Kiev also did not claim responsibility for the action, although in the past in similar cases it often confirmed its involvement directly or by hints.

The authors of the publication also emphasize that the assassination attempt occurred against the background of active trilateral talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States aimed at ending the war. And the Russian delegation was led by the head of the GRU, Admiral Igor Kostyukov, who is Alexeyev's direct superior.

Although Ukrainian intelligence services have carried out a number of attacks on Russian officials involved in the war, current and former Western intelligence officials spoke to The Washington Post and expressed doubts that Ukraine was behind the episode.

They noted, in particular, that an assassination attempt on Alexeyev at a time when his chief was negotiating with Ukrainians in Abu Dhabi could have derailed the diplomatic process and drawn the ire of the Trump administration.

"Ukraine's intelligence services have carried out such attacks in the past, but it would be pretty crazy of them to do it now," a former senior US intelligence official told the publication.

He also noted that the participation in the talks of Kyrylo Budanov, who until recently was himself head of Ukrainian military intelligence, would be grounds for an even bigger scandal if it was proven that the assassination attempt was carried out by GUR agents.

"We are not fools, believe me," a former high-ranking Ukrainian security service official who worked closely with Budanov told reporters.

In the opinion of the publication's interlocutors, it is "much more likely" that the assassination attempt on Alekseev was linked to an "internal problem." In particular, his participation in the suppression of the Wagner Group uprising in 2023 is mentioned.
