What Swan Lake Meant During Putin's Visit To China

Opinion of Ukrainian diplomat Kyslitsa.

First Deputy Head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, diplomat Serhiy Kyslitsa has seen hidden symbolism in the musical accompaniment of the dinner during Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin's recent visit to Beijing.

The song in question was "Swan Lake" played at the reception. According to Kislitsa, such a choice might not have been accidental.

He reminded that in Russia's modern political culture, this ballet is associated with the end of the era of power. Such symbolism emerged after the August 1991 putsch, when state television broadcast Swan Lake, concealing the events taking place in the country.

"Symbolism in Chinese culture is used to convey complex ideas indirectly and to channel the right messages...Was the Moscow dictator thinking about how much time he had left, or how much time he could buy by serving Beijing? In any case, the choice of entertainment at the banquet turned out to be extremely symbolic," the diplomat wrote.

Kislitsa also ironically commented on Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova's attempts to look for symbolism in her own name, pointing out that the "ma" part in Chinese means "horse," and the current year is supposedly associated with that symbol.

"If not black swans and horses of the apocalypse, the Ukrainian armed forces will certainly bring Moscow everything it deserves," he added.
