The main obstacle may be France.
The French government formed by the right-wing National Rally party may block Britain's return to the European Union if London does not hold a new referendum on the issue. This was reported by The Telegraph on May 22.
The contenders for the leadership of the Labor Party, one of the two largest political forces in the UK, allow for the possibility of canceling Brexit, i.e. the country's exit from the European Union, after the next election. However, for the new country to join the EU requires the consent of all 27 member states, and each of them has the right to veto.
The Telegraph writes that in France, one of the favorites for next year's presidential election is Jordan Bardella - the leader of the right-wing Euroskeptic party "National Unification" and a political associate of Marine Le Pen, who led this political force for many years.
Bardella's economic adviser, MEP Charles-Henri Gallois, told the publication that the party may oppose Britain's return to the EU without a second referendum. According to him, a return without a new vote would be a "denial of democracy," as Britons had previously supported leaving the European Union in a referendum. Gallois also emphasized that the National Rally is generally against EU enlargement.
If the UK applies to return to the EU, it will face lengthy accession negotiations, and the European Commission is likely to require London to give up the exemptions and budget rebate the country enjoyed before Brexit, the media outlet noted.
