However, fellow party members are not letting Hungary's prime minister off the hook.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is leaving office after his election defeat, announced at a meeting of the Fidesz party that he also intends to resign as head of the political force.
Hungarian publication Telex reported this on Tuesday, April 28.
Orbán's statement was not approved by Fidesz, however. One of the party's founders, Tamas Deutsch - a longtime Orban associate - said everything will be decided at the June 13 congress. According to Deutsch, if the congress expresses confidence in Viktor Orban, the latter will remain head of Fidesz.
Another Fidesz spokesman, Eric Banki, noted that the April 28 meeting discussed the reasons that led to the party's defeat in the parliamentary elections. Asked whether there would be another candidate for a leadership position other than Orbán at the June congress, Banki gave a somewhat veiled answer - in particular, he said that first there would be a renewal of the leadership in local groups, and then those groups would elect delegates who could nominate candidates for various positions.
