White House Says Xi Jinping Wants To Buy More Oil From U.S.

Beijing is ready to reduce its dependence on supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.

Chinese President Si Jinping has expressed interest in buying U.S. oil to reduce China's dependence on supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported by the White House press office in X.

The American and Chinese sides agreed that the strait should not be closed. "Xi Jinping also made it clear that China opposes militarization of the strait and any attempt to charge for its use, and expressed interest in buying more U.S. oil to reduce China's dependence on the strait in the future," the report said.

The two sides also agreed that Iran should never obtain nuclear weapons.

Beijing continues to be the largest importer of oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz. China has received at least 11 million barrels of crude oil from Iran since the U.S. military operation began, CNBC reported on March 11. All of this Iranian oil was going through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked to other tankers. China accounted for up to 5.35 million barrels of crude oil per day, according to data from the first quarter of last year.

Trump arrived in Beijing on May 13. The main events of his visit are scheduled for May 14-15.
