This is the first such case in the world.
Malta's government has signed an agreement with US company OpenAI that will give all residents of the country free access to the ChatGPT service, writes Reuters.
"Malta is the first country to launch a partnership of this magnitude because we are not letting our citizens fall behind in the digital age. We are putting our people at the forefront of global change," the country's Minister for Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri commented on the deal. He added that in this way the Maltese authorities intend to turn "an unfamiliar concept into practical help" for citizens.
The first phase of the program called "Artificial Intelligence for All" will start in May. Access to free subscriptions will be curated by Malta's Digital Innovation Authority. To be able to use the advanced version of ChatGPT Plus for a year for free will require an application and a special AI for All online course developed by the University of Malta. The program will also be available to nationals living abroad. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed by OpenAI. A ChatGPT Plus subscription costs $20 per month. Malta is home to 574,200 people.
