CNN: Xi Noticed That Russia Is Losing To Ukraine

It's time for Trump to have an "epiphany" too.

During a visit to Beijing by US President Donald Trump, Chinese leader Si Jinping said Russian dictator Vladimir Putin may one day regret invading Ukraine and new trends on the battlefield suggest he is right.

CNN, Putin expected his troops to seize all of Donbass this year, but that has not happened. This year, it has been Ukraine, not Russia, that has made territorial gains, as well as inflicting huge losses on Russian troops, which range from 30,000 to 40,000 killed and wounded per month.

"Putin himself recently stated that the war may be 'coming to an end' - a startling statement from a leader who has repeatedly presented this war as an existential struggle requiring endless sacrifice," the publication emphasized.

Putin's war goals at the time of the invasion included the complete subjugation of Ukraine, weakening NATO as an alliance, and re-establishing Russia as the dominant Eurasian power.

"These goals are becoming increasingly unattainable for Moscow: the battlefield and the outcome of the war are now centered in the Donbass, and Russian forces have no chance of capturing Kiev, Putin's original goal," the publication emphasized.

So, the publication noted, Putin cannot boast of any results in his war against Ukraine, and the situation only seems to be getting worse with each passing month.

Si's statement

Returning to Xi's statement, journalists noted that it is not only important in terms of what it may say about Russia. It is also important in terms of China's plans for Taiwan.

In the meantime, the US has an opportunity to reinforce Xi Jinping's caution. "The sensible move now is to strengthen NATO and its support for Ukraine to demonstrate to Putin that he has no chance of regaining ground and to Xi Jinping that action on Taiwan will be met with a coordinated response," the reporters opined.

Trump's Opportunity

Trump's goal regarding Ukraine is to end the war diplomatically. But, as the publication emphasized, diplomacy has reached an impasse because Ukraine is unwilling to give up land and Russia is unwilling to sign an agreement without doing so.

That said, Trump's diplomacy was based on the assumption that Ukraine, as the weaker power, must make concessions at the negotiating table or it will lose the war on the battlefield.

"That assumption, once dubious, is now false," the journalists emphasized, adding that new realities on the battlefield offer new opportunities for diplomatic success.

Trump's best chance to end the war now lies not in assuming Ukraine's weakness, as he has done so far, but in recognizing Russia's growing vulnerability.

"There is now leverage to force Ukraine to settle on terms acceptable to it and Washington should take advantage of it," the journalists concluded.
