The US Justice Department has permanently barred the Internal Revenue Service from auditing President Donald Trump's finances.

The US Department of Justice has formally barred the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from conducting any audits into the past tax returns of US President Donald Trump, his family and companies controlled by him.

The document was signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch.

What the document says

According to the document, the U.S. government can no longer audit:

any of Trump's tax returns filed before Monday, May 19;

any issues "that have been raised or may have been raised" in previous audits.

The wording of the document is as broad as possible and effectively shuts down any possibility of future tax audits against Trump.

How this relates to the settlement agreement

The document expands on the agreement Trump reached with the IRS on Monday. Under its terms, he agreed to drop a $10 billion lawsuit - compensation for the leak of his tax returns.

But the Justice Department created a special fund worth nearly $1.8 billion to pay those affected by the illegal use of government agencies for political purposes.
