U.S. officials said that at the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Iran, a surprise scenario for a change of power in Tehran was discussed - with a possible return to leadership by former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, writes The New York Times (translated by Charter97.org).
Sources said Israel allegedly planned a strike on his residence in Tehran to eliminate guards and release him from house arrest. It was speculated that the politician could have been a compromise figure to form a new government.
Ahmadinejad, known for his harsh anti-Western rhetoric during his 2005-2013 presidency, has clashed with Iran's elite in recent years and has himself been subjected to restrictions within the country.
It was reported that he was wounded on the first day of strikes on Iran but survived. His security detail was destroyed and he later effectively disappeared from public view, his whereabouts unknown.
